AMH Flannel Plus Quilt

This quilt finish has been a long time coming. I originally purchased this flannel fabric to make a quilt for myself but when my best friend saw it, she fell in love. I bought a bundle for her and a year and a half AFTER her wedding, I've finally finished her quilt.

The Big Reveal!

I am so excited to show you all my new quilt top! Over the past year or so, I have participated in Stitch Tease: An International Mystery Quilt Bee. Basically, we each made a block or strip for each of the other members based off our inspiration boards on Flickr.

Stitch Tease Inspiration

I was already in a few bees when I agreed to join this one so I wanted to keep things easy for my bee mates. I asked for each member to make me their favorite blocks to put together in a strip for my ginormous quilt. My inspiration board was made up of my favorite techniques from Flickr from way back when we started this adventure.

We each chose a fabric to be our "signature" and we had to use it in each block we made. I chose this Cloud 9 organic Across the Pond print:

I started my quilt top with a row of appliqué, my favorite sunburst block and some scrappy butterfly blocks I made. Butterflies are my favorite.

Stitch Tease Starter Strip

Once I made my starter strip, I mailed it off to another bee mate. In order to keep costs low, we each created our blocks and mailed it to the person who would put all our creations together into one, cohesive quilt top to be mailed to the final recipient.

We were only allowed to share teasers of each block we made making the final project a complete surprise!

Here it is: my quilt top!!

Stitch Tease Final Quilt for Me!!!

I window stalked my poor mail lady everyday for weeks waiting for my quilt top to arrive. The day I opened my mailbox and saw a brown package inside, I squealed. Just a little. I couldn't hardly handle the short, 20 yard walk back into my house so I could cut it open. And then I opened up this beauty!! I was overwhelmed. My wonderful friends created a beautiful quilt top for me. I immediately hung it up on my Ikea curtain rod quilt rack I hung up in my room specifically for this quilt!

Here is a list of who made each row on my quilt, and as an added bonus, I've included a link to each of their blogs where they are each sharing their finished quilt tops today too!

Susan made the first row (top down). I love the bright colors and the awesome, inverted design. She incorporated lots of bits from my inspiration board.

Hadley made the second row. Um, freaking AMAZING FLYING GEESE?! I love the scrappiness. Plus, I've never made a Flying... Goose? Geese? Goosen? (Any Brian Regan fans will get that last one)

Di made the third row. I LOVE the polaroids! I've been infatuated with the design since I very first saw it, and what's better, she fussy cut images of some of her favorite things to make the blocks! Tea. Library. Flowers. It's just so special.

Helen made the fourth row. I have had this weird obsession with wonky stars lately. I make them all. the. time. So I love having this great wonky star row full of bright colors and solids. It's perfect!

Annabella made the fifth row. She has such a recognizable color palette and I knew this row was from her straight away! I love her use of Tula and AMH and that she made each block different. Her blocks have inspired me to try some new designs.

Katy made the sixth row. She chose a block I'd never seen before this quilt, but totally love! She used the same design for all her blocks, making one in each of six different colors. It's such a pretty row and I love the fabrics she chose.

Dianne made the seventh row. I was shocked when I saw those paper pieced stars! I was dying. For reals. I LOVE paper pieced blocks, but lack much confidence in my own paper piecing (not that I've actually ever had any issues with it). Again, I love that each block is different.

I made the eighth row.

Stitch Tease Final Quilt for Me!!!

I cannot express in words how much I appreciate my beemates for the work and love they put into each row of my quilt. It's funky and lovely and perfect. I couldn't have been more excited with how it turned out. Each row reminds me of each of them, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT.

Scrap Flannel Baby Quilt

Once upon a time I bought a ridiculous amount of flannel from Jo-Anns and it sat, unused and unloved in a dusty old closet for years. Then, I took the doors off that closet and the flannel was seen with a new light! If only someone would have a baby, I could find a home where that flannel could be loved!!

Enter Reagan.

Reagan Flannel Scrap Quilt

This little lady got the crib bedding I showed you the other day as well as a shnazzy new Christmas stocking, along with her brother.

At my baby shower I received a great baby quilt. It was blue because the lady who gave it to me thought I was having a boy, but I didn't mind. It was pieced together with scraps of novelty children's flannels and tied with the softest yarn you could ever imagine. Like a unicorn's mane, I'm pretty certain. It was, and is, a great source of warmth and comfort for Mazer and I, especially during those late night feedings when we would cuddle together in the plush glider in her darkened room.

As you can imagine, I am someone who understands the intrinsic value of the handmade. This little blue baby quilt is among my most valued possessions.

So how could I not make a scrappy flannel baby quilt for my friend? I hope it brings her just as much joy as ours has for us.

I tied it using some pearl cotton I had on hand and filled it with Warm and Natural I also had on hand. I had just taken it from the wash and just barely remembered to snap a couple pictures before I ran off to meet Reagan's mama and another friend for coffee. It isn't fancy. There's no crazy stitching or piecing. No real reason to take a billion fantastic and artistic shots. I just wanted to show you all something small that means a whole awful lot.

Already hitting 2013 hard

Along with the Scrappy Trip Along quilt, I've been bustin out my Folksy Flannel stash.

A peek at the plus quilt.

This one will be for my BFF. It's a wedding gift even though she got married February 2012. It's the thought that counts, right?! Anyway, this is a real quick, IG peek at the progress.

Gotta lay my quilts out while the monster naps.

AND, the REAL motivation behind getting her quilt together: MY QUILT! I've been dying to make this quilt forever, and while it's still just sitting, waiting to be pieced, at least I have finally cut it up and gotten myself organized. I'm sewing this weekend with friends and hoping I will get to sewing this bad boy together then. I keep telling myself: The sooner these get finished, the sooner I will have a toasty-night's sleep instead of waking up freezing every night!

So that's what I'm working on. Not bad for only a week into the year, amirite?

Butterfly Quilt

In March, my friends Ben and Melody got married and as a gift, I wanted to make them a quilt. I had been dying to make this butterfly quilt for someone (I was thinking I would make it for ME, but I know Mel loves butterflies as much as I do). So I set about making my first applique quilt.

I learned a TON from making this quilt (which is an oversized queen)! I quilted it by check book though since I was in the midst of major sewing machine meltdowns with Vera right around the time I needed to quilt this bad boy. (I got a new machine! I'll share about that soon.)

Anyway, I picked it up from the long-arm quilter and just happened to be running other errands near Mel's work so I decided to just give it to her straight away. The only bad thing: I couldn't do a proper photo shoot. These are just shots I was able to snap around the bridal shop where she works. I also didn't have my trusty quilt display man, so I used a dress rack. Turns out it was a little too short, but you get the idea.

This quilt is HUGE. I couldn't even fold it up on my own. It's actually already been living with Ben and Mel for a couple months, but I've only just realized I never shared the pictures with you. This one makes me so happy that the other wedding quilts I've promised people will be pieced!!
